Mercedes-Benz and CATL Announce Enhanced Partnership in Battery Technology

Industry News – Wednesday, August 05, 2020

The strategic partnership of the companies will support the “Electric First” strategy and the high volume electrification of the EV model portfolio. Contemporary Amperex Technology Co., Ltd. (CATL), a technology leader in Li-Ion batteries, provides CO²-neutrally produced battery cells, across modules for passenger cars to complete battery systems for the vans of the car maker.

CATL’s design integrates the cells directly into the battery, forgoing conventional modules. The partners want to shorten development cycles, increase energy density to support higher ranges of future batteries and reduce charging times.

”We intend to lead in battery technologies, so we are now combining our own research and development expertise with bold partners. We will integrate cutting-edge battery systems to create luxury cars with outstanding range, charging speed, safety and sustainability. Working with CATL will see us accelerate our transformation towards carbon-neutrality,” says Markus Schäfer, Member of the Board of Management of Daimler AG and Mercedes-Benz AG.
