RollsRoyce Supplies Microgrid Battery Storage on Cook Island

A contract over three 40-foot MTU-brand battery containers on the island of Rarotonga, Cook Island, has been awarded to the British company. The storage will be integrated into an existing power plant and support the storage of energy generated by the island’s photovoltaic systems, diesel generators and battery containers. Cook Island aims to meet the energy needs of its inhabitants completely with renewable energies in the near future.

The MTU-containers supplied by Rolls-Royce will be integrated into the local microgrid by an energy solutions provider from New Zealand, Vector Powersmart. The have a storage capacity of 4,268 kWh and a power output of 4,800 kVa. Another two microgrid projects have been supplied by Rolls-Royce in cooperation with Vector Powersmart: a 20-foot battery container was installed on the Cook Island of Aitutaki in 2019 while a 130 kVa battery container in Glenorchy in New Zealand provides photovoltaic energy at night and in emergencies.
