E3/DC Storage Systems Provide Homes with Emergency Back-Up Power During Storm

Industry News – Wednesday, February 12, 2020

February 12, 2020 – Around 1,000 of the domestic PV storage systems installed in Germany by the company E3/DC switched into three-phase stand-alone operation during the stormy weather on February 9 and 10, 2020. This ensured that the systems’ owners still had power throughout the storm while their neighbors were left in the dark.

E3/DC has analyzed the operational data on its portal, which is connected to around 25,000 domestic PV storage systems. The results show that on Sunday the 9th and Monday the 10th, around 1,000 of these systems across Germany switched into emergency power operation to continue supplying their owners with energy. For the S10 E and S10 E Pro series storage systems, emergency power operation means that the domestic power stations are fully disconnected from the public grid and the homes are provided with energy via three-phase supply from the storage system and photovoltaic installation.

By midnight on Sunday, there had been around 200 emergency power switchovers across Germany; the vast majority took place on the Monday. Some individual photovoltaic installations and storage systems ran in stand-alone mode for around eight hours, and in one case almost eleven hours. The most severely affected region, according to the operational data from the E3/DC systems, was in Bavaria around Augsburg, Dachau and Ingolstadt. A total of 258 systems in this area switched over to emergency back-up power. The storm also had a major impact around Passau and the Bavarian Forest. In western Germany, meanwhile, the only significant clusters of emergency power switchovers were recorded around Aachen in North Rhine-Westphalia as well as in Saarland.

According to E3/DC, the storage system automatically switches back to normal operation as soon as the power grid is available again.
