Research Initiative on Alternative Battery Storage at the University of Ulm Approved

An Excellence Commission consisting of international experts and science ministers from the federal and state governments has approved a total of 57 research clusters to receive funding. These include the joint excellence cluster of the University of Ulm and the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (KIT), which have submitted their research projects on storage concepts for a sustainable future. The project will be funded with up to 10 million euros for at least seven years.

„Having won the Cluster of Excellence in the area battery research is an outstanding success for Ulm University and substantiates our national and international leadership position in this globally relevant research field. Universities from all over Germany have applied for Clusters of Excellence with their strongest specialities and we are rightfully proud of being among the very best,” says President of the University Professor Michael Weber in response to the positive decision. He also thanks the Federal Ministry of Science, Research and the Arts (MWK) for the extraordinary support – not only in the context of the Excellence Strategy.

Researchers from electro chemistry, materials science, modelling and engineering will focus on a powerful and environmentally friendly alternative to lithium-ion batteries. With the cooperation the research group wants to create fundamental insights for a battery technology that works without lithium and cobalt, which are becoming increasingly rare. With this excellence cluster, the University of Ulm will further strengthen its position in battery research.
