Storage Boom Continues

Industry News – July 11, 2022

For the year 2022, the market research company EUPD Research expects sales of 200,000 home storage units in Germany. At the same time, PV systems with a total capacity of 2.5 GW and a system size of up to 20 kWp are expected to be added this year.

This means that growth in the home storage sector is continuing. After an addition of 105,000 home storage systems in 2020 and 155,000 last year. In percentage terms, growth will thus increase once again this year by almost 43 percent compared to 2021. Before 2020 to 2021, growth was 29 percent.

In cumulative figures, that's 362,000 installed home storage units in 2020, 467,000 in 2021 and a forecast 667,000 storage units this year, with an installed capacity of 0.8 GWh in 2020, 1.5 GWh in 2021 and a forecast 2.0 GWh in 2022.According to EUPD Research, Germany is expected to reach the one million installed home storage units mark in 2024. This means that Germany is and will remain by far the largest storage market in Europe.

Among manufacturers, BYD, Sonnen, Senec and E3/DC dominate the market, with BYD having a 24 percent market share of installed systems, Sonnen 21 percent, Senec 20 percent and E3/DC 11 percent. In terms of installed storage capacity, BYD and Sonnen are 23 and 20 percent, respectively, but E3/DC and Senec are 17 and 15 percent. This shows that E3/DC installs storage systems with significantly greater capacity than Senec. Alpha EES, LG Energy Solution, Varta, RCT Power, Tesla and Huawei follow in fifth to tenth place.
