Solar Flow Battery Design Converts and Stores Energy Simultaneously

Industry News – Tuesday, July 14, 2020

A paper by chemists from Utah State University shows the potential of multi-purpose batteries that combines energy conversion and storage in one unit.

Scientists from the University of Wisconsin-Madison the Universities of New South Wales and Sydney, the King Abdullah University of Science and Technology in Saudi Arabia and the City University of Hong Kong worked together with Tianbiao “Leo” Liu, Bo Hu and Maowei Hu as authors of the published paper that demonstrates the successful combination of AORFBs and photoelectrochemical solar cells.

“Each of these technologies offers advantages,” Liu says. “The photovoltaic cells convert sunlight into electricity, while the flow batteries can be charged by the solar cells to store solar energy simultaneously. The integrated design produces very high voltage and very stable cycling.”

The team wants to deploy the technology in developing countries where it could be used for energy storage and water desalination as well.
